Colored problems: · Red: usually caused by iron which is soluble in water and forms a reddish brown or yellowish sediment that stains on contact with most things; very small concentrations (less than 1 ppm) can cause problems · Slippery red (slimy) residue: usually a result of iron bacteria · Black: usually caused by manganese and can be indicated by blackish sediment · Slippery black residue: caused by same iron bacteria, but derives its nutrients from manganese · Blue-Green: usually located in the end point of water use (i.e. residences) and is the result of corrosive water which attacks the copper in pipes Other Problems: · Chlorine or swimming pool odor: caused by high combined chlorine levels · Hydrogen sulfite or rotten egg odor: usually caused by the well source or bacterial growth in the system · Septic odor: caused by stagnant water (dead end and dead end loops) Corrosion Problems: · Generally caused by improper balance of pH and alkalinity
